embarrass? like when a player disregards a call and takes the game into his own hands when said game is out of hand already?

Yes, embarrass. If this was indeed a punishment then how could being disciplined in front of a national audience be viewed as anything but embarrassing?

Les is goofy but he's not cruel.

well mostly bc it wasn't even viewed as a punishment by the cfb audience. it was viewed as mercy kneel on the 1 vs a hapless opponent.

i don't see how it's cruel. you go against a coach, you suffer some kind of repercussion. the game was out of hand. you guys can't run the play as called, we'll give it to the other team.

i don't even view the crime or punishment as that serious. as was said, mett was laughing about it afterwards.
