IIRC, Davis makes the best ones

Partially correct. Davis makes the best ones for non-scientific use. I did a good bit of research on them a few years ago for a client, and ended up buying him a Davis system. I talked with Jay Grimes (channel 9 weathermand and all-around smart fellow) and a couple other guys including a professor at LSU. The consensus was there are many better than a Davis system, but the Davis can be had for less than $400, whereas the higher end ones start at $2k or so.

I ended up going with something like this LINK. It's held up well for a couple years in pretty much the harshest environment in Louisiana (Johnsons Bayou).
