Ya Gary, I've looked into parlaying my JD that route myself.
I think I'm just gonna say "frick it" and go back to school for engineering. The fiancee is a starting successful attorney and having one of those in the family is good enough.

How does one parlay their talents into being a landman? What kind of qualifications do you normally need?
My gf will also be making 6 figures out of law school -- frick money

From what I understand, a lot of landman duties are doing title searches on property where extraction is expected to take place. You are basically trying to figure out all the ownership rights and encumbrances in preparation for making offers to the landowners. Non-law degree'd individuals do this all the time, but you could see why having a law degree may help you out.

Fiancee in the same boat and I'm near it as well but I want "frick you" money.
On top of that I think I'd like to stand up a bit more and would appreciate the career field. I'd rather build something than just move money around between Ps and Ds.

The thing about land work is there are no qualifications. I work alongside people with high school diplomas. In this economy (and with hundreds of laid off experienced landmen) it's nearly a prerequisite to have a JD. I've heard of companies that wouldn't hire Right of Way agents without a JD. As for how to get a job: know someone.
