Hadn't seen a map to know what's in that wma, or seen what's been recently added, but if maurepas wma is that cypress and tupelo swamp between I 10 and lake maurepas in st James/John or ascension parish, the young folks in this thread would not believe the ducks that used to hit that swamp. Garyville canal and reserve canal run right through it.
Back in the day (80s), we used to:
1. Park truck on I 10
2. Pole pirogue 250 yards into swamp
3. Put a dozen decoys out/kick water/make ripple
4. Absolutely slay mallards, grays, wigeons and woodies.
Duckman I and II were filmed there, off if reserve canal.
Salvania got loose in that swamp, all the ducks left.
Edit: the crazy thing is the very few ppl were hunting them. All the folks in garyville hunting club (had a friend who's grandad was one of the founders - that was our in) were deer hunting in there. A good year was that whole camp killing line 8 deer. Was nuts. Literally thousands of ducks, with very little pressure. To my knowledge, there was only 1 perm blind on all of garyville hunting club.
