If you don't go for the touchdown when you are that deep in their territory, all you are doing is making it harder on yourself to score a touchdown. You will now have to go FURTHER to score, and have less time.

Kicking the field goal makes you feel better because you feel like that drive was successful and you still have a *chance* to win with time on the clock.

Whereas if you go for it and don't make it, you know the game is over even though there is still a minute on the clock, and there is nothing you can do about it. You can see that error more. It's in plain sight.

But going for it gives your team the best chance to win.
