Funny to me is this- For Spags scheme it was predicated on creating pressure with the front 4 and little blitzing.
On top of just being a poor scheme and a poor scheme fit for our personnel, he also committed to playing the big contract guys and barely gave any of the young guys a chance.
And when you have DEs going up against guards and centers, unless they are used to that, they won't usually be successful and that's what Spags continually tried to do.
Interior and exterior pass rush are completely different skill sets and you can see when you put the right guys in the right place you will succeed.

You realize that the only reason Smith, Harper, and Vilma were pulled is because of injuries right? All three were going to see a ton of snaps if not for those injuries, and this defense would not be as good.
I think Ryan's personality is a great fit for the city, but I hate just giving coaches credit for everything. Spags was in a tough spot because there was no head coach to make the tough calls on those veteran defensive players.
It's hard for me to completely blame Spags when Junior is playing full time now, most of the inside d-line guys are either new or young guys who weren't ready last year. Vaccaro and Lewis weren't on the team last year.
Ryan is doing some great things, like moving guys around, especially Malcolm Jenkins, but it's hard for me to give him all the credit when I said before they even hired a defensive coordinator that just getting guys like Junior and Hicks on the field more would drastically change the defense.
All I'm saying is can we please give some credit to the players? It's annoying that the coaches always get all the credit. Again, patting myself on the back, I said this defense would be much different while most people still had no faith. Any d-coordinator they hired would have looked great with last year being the comparison.
