Wife and I are on a plan for one of us to be self-employed in our mid-30's...that's the goal right now.

I'm 26 and thought I was doing okay with $75k and 15% bonus.

this. i do pretty well for myself and am very busy. wife is an OBGYN resident and will be done in june 2016. after going through medschool and residency with her i don't know if i want her to work. i'd rather have time together, her take care of the house and kids, etc etc. this is considering that my job is very permanent and i won't be giving it up.

I make about 75k - CE, 29 yo
Wife - about 50k - RN
I'm in public sector, could make more elsewhere but like my time off too much
I wish I could make 400k just for a year, that would help out a lot.

You are doing well. Don't fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others.

I know I'm in a good place. These threads always humble me a little though.

Not going to put current income, but if I stay with my firm I'm about 3-4 years from having two commas in my comp. That'll go a long way for a single guy with no kids.

Yep. Breaking six digits I thought I had made it. I got a lot further to go.

Why do you feel this way? I would like to make a little more money, but I am glad I don't feel inadequate.
I have friends that likely make 2-3 times more money than I do and I don't think their lives are exponentially better than mine. I could argue the opposite, the big earners are knocking down 60 hours a week in some law firm...no thanks

Obviously, you can buy nicer toys and stuff. But there aren't many things that drastically improve your life, if you already making 6 figures....IMO
Bigger house, nicer car, I guess.
Other than the ability to travel for freely, I don't know what I would do if I doubled my salary

Like anything else self-employment has its positives and negatives. We recently took a hit to the business from a client that cutback on the work we do for them. They think they can take it in house and maintain the quality of work that we produce. More power to them. It will be cheaper but it won't be better. Guess who takes the hit on his personal income in this circumstance? Still, I don't think I'll ever work for a paycheck from someone else ever again.
Right now I'm out scrambling to replace the business lost while laying the groundwork and doing the research for a new business venture.

You'd find something. Pretty much everyone does.

So the cover of People magazine this week was that Kate Middleton bought a $50,000 rug. I looked at it and thought to myself "holy hell, I'd never buy a $50,000 rug, it doesn't matter how much money I had." But then I thought, if money was really no object, why wouldn't I buy a $50,000 rug? If you are pulling 8 figures, buying a $50,000 rug seems downright reasonable.
Now is a $50,000 rug really going to objectively improve your life, relative to a $500 rug? That I don't know.

Yeah, I guess that's the point.
I would certainly spend it on something, but I don't think my life would be drastically better. I would still have the same friends, etc.

First time looking at this all day
Glad I started this thread. Sure are a lot of successful people in here. Humbles me at the ripe age of 24. Still have a long way to go.
Private consulting here in BR
Definitely have the opportunity to make more out of state. I'm a family guy. All of my family is here.
I love it. Grew up around it. Just got my first property back in April. It doesn't come without work though. My rule of thumb is AT LEAST 10% return a year (After taxes and insurance). Property Cost 70,000 then you should charge at least $700/mo.
Scored a trailer and lot for $44,500. Getting $650/mo.
Glad the thread took off.. Jokes or not. haha
