I'm not trying to hammer Welter unncessarily but on this play he went unblocked, had a direct path to Gurley 3 yds in the backfield, and as best as I can tell failed to even make contact (there - my definition). Why not just tackle the guy with the ball 3 yds in the backfield?

Yes he got in on the tackle about 6+ yds later from behind. "Textbook" - it's author wasn't by chance some guy named Tepper was it?

(As mentioned my post wasn't directed at Welter alone. On the same play Ego gets blocked 3 yds downfield.)

Similarly, there's a play in the 2 qtr from about our own 20, handoff to Marshall to the left which goes for 10+ yds. Lamar Louis is at LB. It appears as if Louis just runs completely opposite from the play before running into a blocker, wakes-up, then finds the ball, pursues, and gets in on the tackle by the sideline. Just mystifying watching this. If there's an explanation, pray tell. Louis was replaced by Welter on the next play.
