It was fired in, the goalkeeper appeared to obscure his vision, and it's easier to strike crosses back towards their origin, i.e., he can reasonably hit about half of the goal.
Still a bad miss, though.

The gif is blurry on my screen, and I didn't see the game, it just looked bad
