Want to get into freshwater fishing more with son - Boat Q

So I've fished here and there throughout my life but its probably nothing compared to the typical OB poster. A couple times a year at most. I want to pick up freshwater fishing and my son loves the few times we go. So I have a few inquiries:
(1) Suggestions on where we can fish? I live in Zachary (metro BR area). I'm thinking we could get across the river and fish in/near the atchafalaya basin.
(2) Suggestions on buying a boat? I'm not wanting to spend more than $3k to $7k. I'd be happy with a little jon boat that comfortably holds 3 persons and doesn't sink.
We use to own a little 13/14 foot aluminum boat we would run here and there and sold it years ago. I have *some* experience owning a boat, but not much. Does anyone have any suggestions or resources for someone wanting to get into more freshwater fishing?

You can get something like this easily in that price range, look on LA sportsman classifieds and others.

Get the welded deck if you can. Not the academy crap

I'd look at Bass Trackers. With a small outboard you can find a relatively newer one at the high end of your price range. Bass Pro sells new ones for under $10k.
The Spillway would be easily fishable from Zachary. There and Lake Verrett. You could also get to Lake Okhissa in MS pretty quick. False River, Old River, and Henderson would also be options under 2 hours. Probably some options east on 12 too,but I don't know much about that area.

I would look more towards a 17' boat for the comfort, if it were me. You have plenty of places around there to fish with the boy.

stay away from rivitted boats and stick with welded ones if the old wallet allows. there are tons of places less than 2 hrs from you where ya'll can go. just ask on the OB and someone will give you advice. don't expect too much advice from other sites (cough, cough, la sportsman) on where and what bc of the mass paranoia that seems to get worse every day.
also, make sure the budget includes a trolling motor.

You don't necessarily need a boat.
Find a pond, ask permission and fish.
You can catch some hogs in ponds.
