A shame it took me this long to watch it
Liked the Neeson/Rush version as well but this one definetly held its own. Hathaway and Crowe had great performances. Singing was pretty good considering musicals aren't any of the actors' specialty

Hugh Jackman was born to sing and dance in this kind of thing.

There was so much singing
So much god damn singing.
So much god damn singing.

I watched about 10 minutes.

Hathaway
I thought she was passable at best. Compare her performance to Ruthie Henshall or Patti LuPone.
They were doing it live while Hathaway and the rest of the movie cast had a great deal of electronic assistance.

I thought Hathaway's performance was slightly overrated, but the whole cast of the movie sang live.

That was little more than a gimmick

but, as director Phyllida Lloyd later explained, the movie only included some of those vocals. Much of what audiences heard was a “blend” of live and re-recorded singing. Considering the sleek design of this Les Misérables—and the imperfect vocal abilities of Amanda Seyfried—it will not be surprising if the live vocals are partly masked with post-production mixing and overdubbing.

I made it an hour. It was just unbearable after that.
If it had been like other musicals with songs intermixed with the dialog that would have been fine.
But what I saw was 95 percent singing and 5 percent dialog.
I couldn't imagine going to see it at the theater. If I had it would have been the only movie I ever walked out on.
I'm not saying it was bad. There was just much damn singing.

That doesn't actually prove that the live versions in Les Mis weren't used, it proves that someone else thinks they weren't.

That's true. The cast and producers made a huge deal out of singing live only to have the truth come out that it wasn't as live as they were putting forth.
Ruthie Henshall, now she did it live.

The director is telling you only a small amount of live singing was used and the rest was a blend.
Even the so-called live crap was enhanced electronically.

I willing to be corrected. Link?

I thought Hathaway was quite good and Jackman inconsistently good. Crowe was intermittently terrible as a singer (I was surprised to hear he supposedly did a lot of singing earlier in his career).

Yep. When they started singing simple conversational phrases I knew I was facked. It was good for what it was but that is really not my thing. I felt every one of the 158 minutes as they crawled past.

In my humble opinion, I thought it was great. Saw live show in London years ago, great story and music.
