OK, now I'm really confused. I'm watching the Ole Piss vs Vandy game and Ole Miss has a defensive player wearing #12 and a different guy on offense that also has #12. Didn't catch the start of the game, did they get some kind of penalty for this?

It's pretty common for guys on offense and defense to wear the same number.

I think the rule is for people playing on the same side if the ball or at the same position. This is because it can be used in a deceptive manner.
