Since I already have a .223, I'm wondering if there is any practical reason to get one of these 17WSM.

One thing to consider on cost of the bullets is that the 17 WSM comes in boxed of 50 where the .223 comes in boxes of 20. Looking at prices on Midway show that a box of 223 V-Max is $18.49 while the 17 wsm is $14.99.
