Do i have to start with season one of Korra to understand the full story?

I'd start off with Season one of Avatar: the Last Airbender, and then go from there. It helps you understand the universe and characters more, but I wouldn't say it's entirely essential. It's a new story they're telling, so it's possible you could keep up.

Like OML said, you should start with the original series first.
I've yet to watch the new show yet, but it's on my list.
