It's no new development that the New Orleans Saints are looking for an answer at the LT position after 2012 starter Jermon Bushrod signed with the Chicago Bears this offseason, but as we take a step back and regard each team's situation heading into training camp, the battle for the gig in 2013 -- as well as the long-term future at the position -- continue to be dominant storylines for Sean Payton's team.

The incumbent heir to the position is Charles Brown, a 2010 second-round pick. Unfortunately, Brown has been plagued by injuries throughout his NFL career, and this is likely his final chance to make a name for himself. While Brown was a second-rounder in 2010, another competitor -- Jason Smith -- was the second pick overall back in 2009. After a falling out with the club that drafted him (St. Louis), and a somewhat forgettable 2012 campaign with the Jets, Smith is the LT option on the roster with perhaps the highest ceiling. Lastly, there's 2013 third-rounder Terron Armstead. There are high hopes for Armstead, but given that he's making the jump from the FCS level, the Saints may envision him more as their LT of the future than their LT of the present.

To that end, both Brown and Smith have contracts that expire after 2013, so if Armstead is not showing proper development through his rookie campaign, the Saints may be back to the drawing board when the 2014 offseason begins.

I have really high hopes for Armstead - Honestly, I expected him to start this year. I've been reading a few blogs on the guy, and it seems his mechanics aren't the smoothest. This is arguably the most important position on the O-Line (at least for the Saints' scheme) and we're basically flipping a coin to find a starter. Where's Willie Roaf when we need him????

No, it's not. We have all of our money in interior, because Brees is flustered by pressure up the middle.

The LT spot so far this year has given up "zero" sacks.
I'm good so far.

uh, it is less important in our scheme than anywhere else

I'm not sure why it would "start" to scare you. Nothing has changed

First of all, nothing has changed since OTAs.

Brown has played well when he isn't injured. And as everyone here agreed, Bushrod was no Willie Roaf.

No. We have a seasoned veteran of our offensive line, a former 2nd overall pick and a rookie competing for a spot. That's better than what's available at OLB and similar to our situation at DT.

You couldn't be more wrong. Brees steps up in the pocket so well that outside lineman like LT & RT do not need to be our best lineman. Our best lineman need to be our guards to keep the pocket from collapsing in the middle and being pushed back into Brees. For an example of why everyone else is right and you are wrong, see the Washington game from last year.

I assume you mean Roaf and he's at Visions if you need him.

Listen to your fellow STers man, we gonna be fine at LT.
The way Drew steps up into the pocket and the fact he has such a quick release He's gonna make the next LT a probowler just like Bushrod.

I'd prefer a Brown/Armstead over Bushrod

Brees made Bushrod look good, not the other way around.

I was not a Bushrod fan. I think anyone listed can step into his shoes and do just as well, if not better.

Brees is similar to Marino.

Neither have great speed, but they both have great peripheral vision and a quick first couple of steps to avoid a sack.
