1.6 was just released, which requires the new launcher.
I would be interested in joining if it were a true survival based, (semi) vanilla server.
I doubt you would need to rent a server that would allow for more than 10 players slots. Historically, for TD servers, there are anywhere from 6-9 people on in the evenings during the first week, and after the first week, you would be lucky to see more than 3 people on at the same time.

yeah I forgot that its never very big and yes it would be more or less vanilla. No mods or anything. I dont know how to set stores up but if people want them I would learn.

Well, some mods would probably be preferred by most - Essentials, for example, which allows use of the /home and /back commands.
Honestly, though, it may be best to wait a bit. Minecraft is currently going through a rather substantive transition at the moment. 1.6 was recently released, which requires an entirely new launcher. The new launcher, however, allows everything from resource packs (which replaced texture packs) to mods to be installed directly from the launcher itself. Mods will likely have to be updated to take advantage of this.
Additionally, there are strong rumors that 1.7 could be the Biome update, which could contain not only a multitude of new biomes, but alterations to the way terrain generates as well.
