Tombstone vs Wyatt Earp and Saving Private Ryan vs Thin Red Line violated too, but since they were more based on history, I guess they get a pass

I'll excuse that one since it started as a collaboration between Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner that split into competing movies.
The reason for the split is reflected in the differences in the two. Russell's "Tombstone" was an action picture focusing on Earp's life from Tombstone through the end.
Costner's "Wyatt Earp" was a biopic covering Earp's entire life that tried to cover a lot more years in only about 45 more minutes of screentime than "Tombstone".
It isn't like this was a case of one trying to make a "mockbuster" to glom off the publicity of the other film.
