And he admittedly liked Darabont's more.
I was actually surprised to find out that King didn't write the ending that way. It certainly seemed like something he would have written. I wonder if he was pissed he didn't think of it.

SPOILERS (The Mist):

It's just one of the most completely tragic things I've seen in a movie and left me feeling sick the rest of the day. I have kids, so it hit me really hard. There he is...in what he thinks is an impossible situation and does the most difficult thing imaginable. He makes what he feels is probably the most loving and selfless decision he can possibly make to prevent suffering for those he cared about...and then ends up robbing all of them and himself of...what's the word I'm looking for?

I guess there isn't a single word that can describe it, but what he lost are those experiences that make life have meaning, especially to married couples or parents. His "act of extreme love" literally stole his ability to continue show his love for his son--to experience his son growing up, getting married, having grandkids, loving them... And that's just the issue with son not including the other 3 people in the car. The whole of it together just doesn't get anymore tragic. I wanted to puke when I saw that tank.

I was actually really angry at the ending. It was almost like...How dare he make us experience that. I was by myself and I literally said out loud, "you son of a bitch" as if I was speaking to the director and he were right in front of me. I honestly thought it was worse than Ned's head or the Red Wedding.

But I have to give him his props. I did have a very visceral reaction and I'm assuming that was what he was going for. Bastard.
