He played in the midfield more than a couple of times. It was really the only positive thing FSW did while he was at Chelsea. When he was in the midfield he looked much better than he ever did at CB.
Just because he moves to midfield or plays more in the midfield doesn't mean he can't play CB if we needed him to from time to time. We have four guys that we could play there and it just so happens two can play other positions.
I like Ivan at CB but I think he helps Chelsea more at RB right now. I was not impressed with Azpi last year.

I don't rate Cahill
Why?
Defensively I think he's one of the best.

Yea I don't understand that either. I can hardly think of a time I remember thinking Gary was to blame for us conceding a goal and can think of many times thinking he made a great tackle/block/clearance to save our bacon.
Also like I already mentioned he's got the odd goal in him as well which, for a CB, is just an extra cherry.

He has poor positioning and is error-prone. Hopefully he is grateful to have another error-prone defender alongside him to take most of the heat. A good example was when either Luiz or Ivanovic (don't remember which) were shown red against United last season after RVP beat Cahill with ease. He also had a terrible play for England when they played Brazil recently that ended in a goal.
I read an article on Chelsea's centre-backs a few months ago. If I recall correctly, the side gave up more goals when Cahill started than when any other combination of Terry/Luiz/Ivanovic started.

Dude beasted against Barcelona and Bayern in The CL last season and for that I'll be forever grateful. Seemed like incredible block after incredible block out of him.
He got beat by RvP and Neymar in big televised games. Big deal. So do nearly all CB's.
He's rock solid defensively in my estimation.

His block and clearance from his arse at the end of the Europa Final was one of the best defensive efforts I've ever seen.
He may never be a superstar and isn't particularly flashy but I would take him on my back line any day.

If there is a knock on Cahill it's he seems slow at times to close out on guys. Any time he is 1 v 1 with a good forward he backs off and this hurts us sometimes. To me, it seems that he makes more sliding blocks and good clearances more than he hurts us. If Beast is correct in that more goals are scored when he is in there, I wonder how many of those were paired with Luiz than Terry. Luiz and Cahill tends to be a train wreck.

I like watching Luiz in the DM position. CB... meh.

Yep, like in one of the biggest games of last season, vs Tottenham, on Adebayor's goal. Seems to me that if Cahill woulda stepped up, he woulda had plenty of defensive cover if he did get beat but he left him wide open just outside of the box.

Bho, where did you see De Rossi to Chelsea is a legit possibility?

Anybody actually seen this kid play? I've seen a lot of people on the Chelsea Message Board that think he's the real deal.
I've seen him.
I'm not sure 5'4 is accurate but he's short.
Quick as the dickens and finishes extremely well. Reminds me a lot of a young Michael Owen.

I will read that article when I get a chance Beast. I just skimmed it and it brings up the "small errors that go unnoticed" that I was alluding to. I don't think Cahill is great, but he isn't terrible.
Randy, I have seen it popping up more frequently on twitter the last few days. Supposedly they want Wallace on loan as part of the deal and Wallace was a last minute exclusion from Asian tour. There was also an ESPN deportes guy that said the deal was nearly complete this afternoon. It's hard to sift through the shite of silly season, but this one keeps popping up.

God bless those of you that try. I gave up after my first summer of following this stuff.

Hmm, I may need to re-evaluate my assessment of Gary.

I mean I know to some people on here I'll always be the a-hole or whatever but olddawg will always be the guy who rated Marko Marin.
