to me, hector is the one that doesnt deserve much sympathy. he could save his city, his wife, and his son by returning helen. yet he chooses and keeps choosing to save his spoiled, childish brother.

I thought this was discussed in the movie, and the conclusion was that returning Helen would not mend things.
