re: Solar panels and hookups for camps

I have a solar system at my camp. So do quite a few of my camp neighbors.

My system consists of 3 50 watt panels, a 1000 watt power invertor, a solar charge controller & 4 6 volt golf cart batteries.
I do have plans to add a couple more panels which I recently picked up from a friend.

This will not run AC but does work well for lighting, fans, TV, radio, etc..Key is be CONSERVATIVE with power usage & have a generator as a backup. I rarely run my generator during winter months.

As others have said it is rather costly if doing a complete new system. If you know someone who can hook you up with cheap used panels it may be worth it. Set of 4 batteries alone is over $500. Don't mess with low end batteries.

Definately not for everyone but worth it to me for the peace & quiet alone.

Battery system is wired for 12 volts but uses 6 volt batteries. Pair 2-6volts for 12 volts then hook in series. Golf cart batteries likely best bang for the buck as they are true deep cycle. I guess a car battery would work but most solar forums advise against that. As suggested you may want to look into a simple battery inverter setup for starters. Can always add solar later.
