I think the birds were helping the Walker, they led him right to Sam and made all that commotion. If they were helping Sam they could have swarmed the Walker and pecked him or something.

Not sure if those were crows or ravens. Maybe when the men of the black die they turn into crows and they came to warn Sam. I wonder if the show writers are fans of brandon Lee?
If they were ravens, they were probably the ones that Sam were in charge of. He had been working with them for quite some time. Either way I believe they were there to warn him.
