I watched the first season at least 5 times before I read the book. I still think you should read the first book. Give you some good background.
It's hard to get through but especially if you have only seen season 1 once you should read it

Read from the start. It's great and will make you know the characters even better. Plus there's one huge scene missing in the show that's in the books.
