The very least you could do is read the article in this post to a get sense of their strategy and some actual context for the situation, the latter of which is key to this discussion. The Astros signed middling FA for years and neglected their farm system, which is why they're in this situation. Overpaying for someone like Kyle Lohse would not have benefited them in the long run.
And I fully acknowledge that Crane could turn the Astros into the new Pirates. But he's only had the team for one full season. At the very least he's stated his strategy and made some excellent personnel hires on the baseball side.
