How does Mad Men progress through the seasons?

A few years ago I watched the first episode of Mad Men and the first episode of Breaking Bad. I wasn't really that into Mad Men so I didn't continue. I ran through Breaking Bad. I was back looking for something to watch and gave Mad Men another shot. I'm almost through season 1 and I am really enjoying it. How does it progress through the next few seasons? Get's better? Worse? What am I in for? I intened to keep watching, for sure.
PS: I did search but a lot of the results were spoiler related and episdoe threads, so I didn't want to start clicking and possibly ruin anything.

Over the past few weeks I have been running through Mad Men. The first few episodes and really the whole first season were a little hard to get through for me.
IMO the show was at its best through season 3, peak in 4 and sustaining through what I've seen of 5. It's great now.
Breaking Bads best season is the fourth, but starts getting much better season 2

I didn't really get into Mad Men until about halfway through the 3rd season I think. So I can't really answer your question.
But I did want to ask how you are watching it now. Are you binging and watching like 3 episodes at a time, or watching one and letting it breathe a little before going on to the next one?
I feel like for me, it's one that should breathe. Just wondering how others have experienced it.

Only one character (Peggy) has grown, although Pete has flirted with character growth once or twice. Rather, we see deeper and deeper into the characters. Don too, but to a lesser degree.
The last two seasons we've "jumped" further than the calendar suggests. Form 4 to 6, now everyone has long hair, facial hair and smokes dope.
ETA:
Joan's boobs got BIGGER, if you believe that.

I have loved every season of Mad Men, but I think what makes each one better than the prior ones is that as a viewer you become more aware of the depth of the themes and symbols in the show and of the characters personalities the more you see them on screen.
Mad Men is such a complex show on the human condition that it takes awhile to sift through all the sex and drinking to realize what is truly happening in these characters' minds.
With that said, I think Season 4 and 5 were the best, and Season 6 is off to a tremendous start.

It's an excellent show that's how's some great character development.
Although this recent season has pissed me off, I still watch.
ETA: I agree season 6 is wonderful, just crazy how easily Don falls into his old habits. Clearly he has some issues he is trying to work out.

Steady as she goes. Nothing overly dramatic but one of the best shows on TV. One of the few TV shows my wife and I watch together. Enjoy.
