Personally, I'd avoid pre-treated charcoal & lighter fluid in general. I know you're tip-toeing in with minimal expense, but I highly recommend lighting your charcoal with a chimney, wad of newspaper and matches. You may spend $15 on a chimney, but you'll save tons on lighter fluid and the finished product will actually be edible. Once you get away from lighter fluid, you can taste it in other's Q. Pretty nasty stuff.

The chimney goes in place of the charcoal tray? You are correct, I am new at this. I don't mind trying something. Hell, it may be a good idea to try a few tips at first to learn what works for me and the smoker. I'm all ears at this point
