Where do you guys read this? He was responsible for the defeat of 3 great KG including the Sword of the Morning.

As I recall, he and his men outnumbered the Kingsguard 2 to 1 at least. You say this as if he killed Arthur Dayne in single combat. My understanding is he damn near died and Howland Reed saved his arse. He commanded one arm of Robert's army during the revolt. I never said he wasn't a hell of a leader and tactician, but I don't see him beating Dayne, Selmy, Hotah, Garlan, Rhaegar, or Ser Robert Strong/Red Viper in single combat. He could probably best Thoros, but I don't have Thoros on the Kingsguard for his prowess with a sword.

ETA: And to clarify - my criteria for Kingsguard does not specifically include tactical or strategic understanding. Most of what the Kingsguard does is stand around and wait for some fools to try to kill the king, even during times of war. They aren't generals. So, the two most weighted categories of a Kingsguard are loyalty and swordsmanship. Strategy and tactical planning are lagniappe. The only exception is Thoros, who can bring the dead back to life.

I realize he had numbers, but nowhere in the novels does it describe him as an average fighter as you put it. It does talk of how the North's fighters are undervalued because they don't really do tournaments and the singers rarely visit to make songs about how bad arse they are. Ever heard of Cregan Stark? Probably not and I just happened to catch his name in passing. Aemon the Dragonknight called him the greatest swordsman he ever met. Point being, the North is full of bad mother's that don't go around trying to pump up their legends. I don't think he was on the other's levels, but he would have made for a great Lord Commander.

Say what? Kingsguard fight in every battle. Some stay back to guard the King but many also lead his armies. They are said to be the finest knights and warriors in the 7 Kingdoms. Of course you want them fighting if you think your kingdom is in danger.
