Why Do Some Expansion Teams Do Well Early While Others Struggle to this Day?

In the NFL, both the Panthers and Jaguars went to the Championship games in less than 5 years of existence and the Panthers went to the Super Bowl shortly after. In the NBA, the Magic went to the Finals in 6 years and have been to 2 in 25 years. The Heat have also won 2 in the span. In the MLB, the Diamondbacks and Marlins (2x) also won it all. At the same time, the Raptors have yet to win a playoff series, the Bobcats are god awful, and the Hornets have never got out of the second round. Is it bad management or just bad luck?

Drafting.
When you pick at the bottom of the barrel for multiple years, you get crazy good talent.

Well basketball can really be influenced by one or two great players which explains the NBA. The rest are much more complex.

Good talent evaluation and willingness to spend money.

But the Raptors had Carter and T-Mac. I mistyped the Hornets comment.

The Panthers and Jaguars received 14 more draft picks over their first two years than other teams, including an extra pick in every round before year one. They were also allowed to draft anyone they wanted in the expansion draft regardless of salary, meaning they could select inexpensive players and preserve as much cap room as possible to use for FAs. The NFL changed these rules significantly by the time the Browns Part 2 and Texans came along, which explains in part why it took them so long to make the playoffs (shitty No. 1 pick QBs and drafting in general played a part as well).

I still contend Carr could have been above average if he didn't get the shite kicked out of him.

The Mariners are one of the relatively new baseball teams and they only have been to the ALCS once. 12 years since they last made the post-season.

Started in 95.
there are also some teams that have been around forever who have never won.

He actually had a shot with a decent o-line and failed. By all accounts he just didn't have it upstairs and he wasn't very studious.

At that point he was damaged goods.
It makes Aaron Rodgers that more amazing, because the dude gets lit the hell up behind that shitty o-line.

The o-line improved a bit in yr 2 but he kind of stagnated (though he was hurt for a while).

What are teams on 10 year plans now? They have had like 6 coaches in that span.

They do the things good teams do, which includes some luck.
I mean you mention the Magic making it to the Finals in 6 years. I think it might have something to do with the fact that in the middle of those 6 years they drafted Shaq.
The same year the Magic started the NBA also debuted 3 other expansion teams; Miami, Charlotte, and Minnesota. Those 3 didn't draft a Shaq and it took 16 years for any of them to make a Finals let alone win a title.
Expansion teams are no different than teams in the leagues for decades. Somehow get the best players and you win more than you lose.

With the exception of the Hornets, all of those teams have been to the conference finals. Outside of the Wolves, they also had stars to build around (Mourning, LJ/Glen Rice/Shaq,Penny). Hell, the Grizzles haven't even made it that far in 18 years. Drafting bums like Big Country didn't do them any favors.

The best draft pick they've had their entire existence is Kemba Walker. Let that sink in.
ETA: Best pick they still have left on their team at least.

That's their fault for wasting picks on the Sean Mays and Adam Morrisons of the world who are out of the league.
