While not showy, that scene outside the diner is very well done to show how close he is to losing all composure and breaking down. It forces you into the character's shoes.

"Directing is editing". I forgot who said that, but it really is true. Totally with you on pacing. It's such a problem in so many films -- poor pacing.

I don't know who said it, but I agree with it. The good directors have an eye for things on set that they know will translate well to the camera so that editing need not be extensive. The best directors have the nerve to take what has already translated well to the camera and cut it to shreds in the editing room to create a coherent piece of art.
