They're similar in that it's all about getting as much shoulder rotation as possible, and I think it's fair to say that a great pitcher could probably serve really well if he tried and that a great server could throw a heckuva fastball.

They're different in that the serving motion is less dynamic than the pitching motion. You've gotta stay behind a line so you can't stride.







Pete Sampras had the best serve in the history of the game and you can see the kind of shoulder action he uses in his motion.

I don't know if he had the best serve. But if you narrow it down to tennis players who had an all around great game and were consistently in top 3 throughout their career...then yeah he has the best serve out of them.

There are a couple of guys who had better serves but aren't as great all around IMO.
