Roman harper salary update per nola.com
A league source confirmed that $2.6 million of New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper's salary became guaranteed on the third day of the league year last month, which was reported by ESPN.com. Obviously that makes a big difference when speculating on Harper's job security.
Harper is due a total salary of $5.25 million this year, plus another $100,000 roster bonus. So the Saints could still save $2.65 million if they released him. But that option now seems less likely since they have already made such a financial commitment to him - even though they did just draft a potential replacement in first-round draft pick Kenny Vaccaro.
Harper's salary-cap figure this year is $7.1 million (his salary, roster bonus and $1.75 million in pro-rated portion of his signing bonus). If the Saints release him, he will count $4.35 million against this year's cap, plus another $1.75 million against next year's cap (the remaining pro-rated portion of his signing bonus).

he's a lock for the roster this year (barring a trade) but he's not getting cut. His next saint contract is on the line though.

Last year of rookie deal. I don't see them resigning him unless he has a hell of year.

which makes me throw out a trade possibility. If they like what they see of vaccaro early and can get something for jenkins from a team looking to strike it with him... its possible.

Hartly gets a cold leg in camp and pre season and he will be cut.
What does that do to the cap?
Didn't he just get a auto bump in salary?

A previous poster is suggesting that we can cut him next year but realize the cap hit in '13. If that's the case, then I would agree it would make no sense to cut him.
The only reason to release him this year is to sign someone. So the question becomes can you sign someone of equal value from what you gain in cap space? I'm not sure you can.
Now if it's a combo cut, like cutting Strief and Harper for a better RT, then yes it may make sense.

if its possible to sign an upgrade, you're not a lock.
But yes, we likely sign someone to compete in camp but imo he's still a lock.

IT DoESN'T MATTER who's on the roster today. If its possible to be cut and upgraded... you aren't a lock. I'll say it again if needed.

I'm just going by the stipulation in the title that says as of today. I know they can sign upgrades. That's not what was asked.
I even then went on and said that they likely bring someone in to compete but imo he is still a lock.

You aren't as smart as what you think you are.

There are plenty of guys not included who are close to being locks, but I have not included them because I cannot say with 100% certainty.
So there's a chance we can easily sign someone and upgrade hartley but since he's not on the roster today, it means hartley is a lock... but only for now. Holy frick.

Like I said, I was going by the thread title, and the OP never mentioned signing people to replace other people.
But really, it's not that serious. I said I agree that we likely bring someone in.

I don't see hartley as a 100% lock. He had a contract escalator i believe which isn't terrible but he's proven to be inconsistent. If they find competition that is cheaper and/or a veteran that's been cut they like... they've shown the ability to go that direction before.
Posted on 4/29/13 at 4:27 pm to Chad504boy
And I agree with that except the inconsistency part and him not being a lock.
I also thought he was more inconsistent but blues showed me his percentages from each range and it was much better than I previously thought.
He missed 2 bad short ones that cost us games and that long one against GB that he originally hit before the penalty. Everyone remembers those 3, but he's been way more money than people think.

I think they'll for sure keep all 3 safeties if only because Harper plays a significant role in the scheme and Jenkins is on the end of a pretty reasonably cheap deal.
Now, after this year, all bets are off. Especially if Vaccaro turns out to be as solid a player as I think he will.

Very realistic, if they all stay this year, that this may be the end for Vilma, Smith, M. Jenkins, Harper, and Greer.
That's the last 4 of our Superbowl starters(plus Jenkins when he played Nickel).

Yeah I really don't see a place for Will Smith and Vilma right no was it is, but I guess they're keeping them as locker room leaders.
I guess if you switch up your fronts you can have use for them. I really think Vilma's done though. Can't move like he used to.

Kenyon Coleman and Jim Leonard?

Jim Leonard
If Jenkins gets cut I could see us going Vaccaro, Harper, IAQ, and Leonhard.
I would say the only true lock at safety is Vaccaro. We have 6 guys(plus some rookies aside from Vaccaro) for only 4 or 5 spots.
