Doesn't work that way. He has to actually make the final roster for that kind of money. A lot of UDFA get a scout team contract, which is much less.
Not to mention that a half million a year isn't really that great if it only lasts 2-3 years.

The story from the beginning was that Faulk, despite the opportunity to raise his stock and be drafted fairly high next year, was more worried about getting hurt again and being injured thus forcing him to go undrafted.
He basically ensured that his worst fear came true. It is the definition of a bad decision and it cost him money and perhaps made his chances of making a team a whole lot harder.
