I completely understand trying to stay within a certain budget. However, like you have learned, too cheap is too cheap. If you want magnification, its hard to find anything better than the $300 Leupolds. I am looking at the Mark 8 with the 300BLK reticle but they are up there in price.

Contrary to what all I have said, I know that PSA makes some great knockoff optics. They make some Aimpoint micros that get great reviews for pretty cheap. Just an idea.
