I have a T/C Encore in 17 and a bolt gun. They were making autoloaders as well as 10/22 conversions at one time not sure if they're still are as there was a safety concern or something they're also available in revolvers and lever guns as well as Tactical. But the 44mag gets my vote.

not a pistol or rifle round but I think the 3-1/2 12 ga got popular quick, also.

That's the exact problem. They were unsafe and very unreliable feeding. Imo, the 17 does not even belong in this discussion. It's 300BLK and 308 for rifles (308 just because of the sheer number of them) and 40 Cal and 44 mag for pistols with pistols taking a narrow lead.
