Well I don't think Coldplay tries to pretend like they're hard rock music, they know they're pop. Nickelback tries to pass themselves off as legit rock music, which it definitely is not. Listening to Nickelback is like eating Red Lobster in South Louisiana, it shows that you clearly don't have good taste.
