From an article about the penalty.
quote:
However, the issue with Woods remaining in the tournament, as opposed to being disqualified, was because of the interviews he gave to the media following his second round on Friday evening.
This was Woods' response to a question about getting the bad break on No. 15 and trying to recover:
"Well, I went down to the drop area, that wasn't going to be a good spot, because obviously it's into the grain, it's really grainy there. And it was a little bit wet. So it was muddy and not a good spot to drop.
So I went back to where I played it from, but I went two yards further back and I took, tried to take two yards off the shot of what I felt I hit.
And that should land me short of the flag and not have it either hit the flag or skip over the back. I felt that that was going to be the right decision to take off four right there. And I did. It worked out perfectly."
By his own admission, Woods violated the "as near as possible" portion of dropping at the original spot where the ball was hit. With knowledge of the violation of the rule, Woods could have been disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
Instead, he was not.

However...

Augusta National added the two-shot penalty to his score, meaning he had a 73 instead of a 71 and now is five shots out of the lead. Officials said he was allowed to stay in the tournament under a new rule that keeps players from being disqualified based on television evidence.

That's just it. It wasn't based on television evidence, it was based on him admitting (unknowingly) to breaking the rule.

So, if he had decided to protect his pants from the mud by taking them off and kneeling down wearing only his underwear he would have been OK with the rules?
The Walrus? As soon as he touched his belt to take off his pants they would DQ him permanently from the tour!

I'm not a golf person, but can someone clearly explain this violation/what happened in the last 24 hours that is causing this circus?

Everyone that pulls against tiger woods are a bunch of slapdicks. He's good for the game. You spend all your energy hating one person. It could be Lebron or tiger just STFU and save your energy for something more productive

Couple things:
First if they let him stay he should stay. No on the dq himself
And I just timed the 14 yr old kid from yesterday. It was actually 49.39 seconds.
I will call and see if they take away his one stroke penalty

Im sick of this bullshite with viewers calling in rules violations. Its bullshite because it only happens to players who get alot of coverage on tv. How the hell do we know if other lesser known players are breaking a rule if they arent on tv? Thats what the friggin officials are for at each hole. In my opinion, if they dont see it too damn bad. This bullshite of calling shite in needs to stop before it really gets out of hand.

Yeah your panties are in a serious bunch. I stated a fact. If the rule says no DQ and two stroke penalty, that's what he should take.

I'm gonna go ahead and post this in here too
Anyone who thinks something different should have been done here is an idiot. Everything was by the book. They ruled it a violation after the round and he signed his card. The rule book says that's a 2 stroke penalty. End of story

Definition of hypocrisy. You think golf coverage should "The Tiger Woods Show" because he gets ratings. Then, when he breaks the rules, you scream "IT'S NOT FAIR! HE'S ON TV MORE THAN EVERYBODY!"

When he signed the card it was correct. Augusta fricked up, not Tiger.

No. I'm not the prick who justified the lack of disqualification because he is on TV too much.
