It's not a HIPAA violation to inform the public that an individual is being treated at a clinic or hospital. This happens all the time in the news. It's also OK to give a general status of the patient, e.g. stable condition, critical condition, etc. It is a violation to divulge specific info on the patient, e.g. operation performed, medical history, etc. Stating that they will be able to practice in the fall is not a HIPAA violation. This info is also given out all the time on athletes.
sorry, bro. here's a HIPAA summary that shows you're wrong. all personal information, including an acknowledgement of care by the care provider, is covered by HIPAA.

I stand corrected, but this happens all the time.

Yeah, despite me spelling HIPAA wrong, I work in healthcare. I had to read that shite front to back. I manage 29 hospitals and patient records are a major part of that. You're not supposed to release anything. When celeb and famous athlete status' are released its usually via a spokesperson or themselves (i.e. they gave permission). Rarely is it a leak these days.

Someone got fired for looking up Charlie Sheen's hospital visit in our hospital. Fired the next day actually and they just did it for personal knowledge and not to spill to media.
