Another really good one is a smith 686+
7 shots is better than 6 in any situation.

Value/Quality/Reliability, you can't go wrong with a Glock. I Glock 19 will do the job just fine

I just can't get onboard with suggesting a semi auto for somebody's first handgun.
It's gonna take a noob lots of time to learn how to clear jams quickly and all that other good stuff.
Revolver: point and pull the trigger. If it doesn't go off pull the trigger again.

Pistol > revolver in that case. Yes revolvers are the most reliable handgun out there, but compared to a glock, that reliability is moot point

be careful, glocks have no safety, you may want a beretta 92. damn fine weapon.

I personally don't feel it's a moot point. Glocks jam too. Revolvers aren't without their shortfalls, but clearing a dud in a revolver consist of pulling the trigger again.
I'd never feel undergunned with 6 rouds

Get a revolver, preferably in .357 mag, then you can also shoot .38's to build up to the .357. Get 3 of the speed loaders for it and you are good to go. Like others have said a double action revolver is the best choice for a first time owner for defense. You really only have to aim and shoot. It is as simple as that.

There's a story on the first page about one jamming

I know, I'm just frickin around. Glocks suck.
There's not a more reliable gun than a revolver. FACT.

They definitely jam. My flocks have jammed on me a handful of times :inb4uwerelimpwristing:
Downshift he doesn't necessarily need to get a revolver first. Ill bet you most people on this board had a semi as their first handgun.
Learning to clear jams and reloading us part of learning the weapon, but a newbie can screw up a revolver just as easily as a semi.
He needs to go shoot. He needs someone to run him through how to use his weapon of choice properly. That's what everyone should do IMO.

That's better but you need to target somebody specific and call them an idiot for their choice that does not exactly match yours
