I am looking at purchasing the navionics app. Any other suggestions?
Also, do they really work without a cellphone signal?

Google maps needs a signal. Not sure about, but if you have Android, root and get Blackmart Alpha. You get free programs by dl'ing off of that program instead of the Play Store
I've tried to use maybe 3, but in the end, I just use a paper map and a compass

I believe someone on here said that navionics works without a signal, but I am not positive. I would like to know, I thought about purchasing it but have not yet because it didn't know if it would Work without a signal.

I've got the Navionics app on my tablet (no 4G radio in it). It really does just work off of GPS. It's a great app to have for marking where you dropped crab pots, dragging pins around to calcuate distances, etc. But...I only use it as a back up to my chartplotter/Lowrance/fishfinder.
It will be the best $10 you'll ever spend.
