re: Is "Mendoza" too much to ask?

Yes, there is obviously a point where you try somebody else.
In fact, if we knew today that JaCoby Jones was going to hit below .200 for the rest of the season, then it would be the right thing to do.
But he's a super talented veteran 3rd-year starter, and has been a stellar infielder during that whole time, and has even moved to CF when the coach asked him to do so.
This whole thing is tearing me up right now. It's become painful for me to watch. I know he can do better than this, but I also see that he is just doing things at the plate that simply aren't working.
JaCoby has been far and away my favorite player at LSU ever since he was a freshman in 2011. I like the whole style of his game. I like the way he plays. I like the way he carries himself. He just looks like a baseball player ... who happens to have a terrible swing right now.
I still believe in the kid though. I really do. I just know that I can't complain if he starts getting platooned. Whatever the coaches decide to do, I hope they find a way to get this kid ready for the playoffs, because I think he can still deliver in clutch time at the CWS.
It's been such a strange year. Rhymes, Ross, Jones, & Sciambra, have all sort of failed to live up to offensive expectations, and yet the team itself is wildly successful.
I can't get over how good Bregman & Ibarra are, (EDIT: plus the new outfielders), and then of course, Katz, probably the player I've most underestimated in the entire time I've been watching LSU baseball. Holy crap.
If this team ever gets all cylinders hitting at the same time, it might become one of the best in all of college baseball in recent decades.
I don't know what to say anymore. I'm almost speechless at this point.

Glad to see you stopped the bleeding.

No need to put extra pressure on Jacoby by benching him...
There are times when it can actually take pressure off a player by letting him platoon for a while.
I remember once when I was batting 3rd on the team and was just doing horribly, and it was the most baseball pressure I've ever felt in my life when the coach just kept putting me out there.
It's a very tough situation to be in mentally. The coaches have got to find a way to get this kid ready to hit for the CWS though.
Even if you believe he just doesn't have it in him to ever be a great hitter, we can still get more out of him than this. He's at least got the potential to hit .270 against top ranked teams I would think.

Crazy thought....put him at DH in a mid week game and see if that has any kind of influence on his mental state. And put foster at 2nd.
Worth a shot mid week.

You guys are expressing it better than me. Of course I like the kid. I like anyone that passes on MLB to play college ball at LSU. There is talent there obviously and I hope it gets turned around. Sometimes you just need a change...maybe this is one of those times. I dunno. Maybe he starts tearing the cover off the ball...that would be fine with me!

Its tough with Jacoby because you know he can hit. He didn't do it last year thoug and has gotten worse. We have other guys who can play second but I don't see any of them hitting above .300. It may be worth it to hold out longer.

Maybe so. I know we really don't know what is on the bench because of the lack of experience. I do worry though because this was the soft part of the SEC schedule. Its about to get real in a hurry. :)

You don't mean to be negative? We would be way better. Probably 3 or 4 wins better.

I'm not a batting coach for sure...but I sure would love to see Jacoby lower his hands a little. Kinda like Katz. He has a lot going on in his swing after the pitch...including having to lower his hands. It's tough to change mechanics..so a lot to ask..but he needs to simplify things.

I don't understand why talking about baseball and the possibility of changing up one position means I am negative. I really don't understand why a person cannot get on a sports board and talk about legitimate sports without being attacked. I guess I am just a "troll" because I am on an LSU sports board talking LSU sports.

Do you think the deadening of the bat has hurt him or had that already occurred prior to the freshman year?
Posted on 3/31/13 at 5:52 pm to tigerfan1
Had already occurred I believe.
Posted on 3/31/13 at 5:57 pm to tigerfan1
If you're asking my opinion..I think he is a great athlete who got by as a freshman because he didn't see a ton of breaking balls. As the scouting reports came in..he has seen more and more of them...and he still can't hit them. He also takes too big a swing for his mechanics. Katz takes a big swing..but with his simplified mechanics..his swing is on plane right off the bat. Jones has to drop his hands and go through all sorts of gyrations before swinging.

I do notice he seems to be kind of herky jerky up at the plate. I know this can't help this year but I would like to see him build up some more muscle in his arms. I wonder if that might not help stabilize his swing a bit.

Please people....did you ever play sports? When you slump, you grab some bench, refocus, get pissed off and kick arse the next time you get the opportunity to play! It works!
I don't think you ever played sports.
Posted on 3/31/13 at 6:30 pm to RummelTiger
I did and grabbed plenty of bench.
Posted on 3/31/13 at 6:31 pm to RummelTiger
When you go 1 for 27 the bench is just about as warranted as it will ever be.

This is typically how I look at it...
PM knows more about baseball than I do.
PM know more about this team than I do.
PM knows more about his players than I do.
PM is coaching this team, and I'm not.
Therefore, until he starts to monumentally fail at his job, I will have to respect the points listed above and roll with the decisions he makes.

You sound like a reasonable person and fan

Jacoby's hitting is fricking pathetic but I'm not sure we have anyone on the bench any better as a total package
