But really, even an i3 paired with a 7970 is a perfectly capable gaming machine
I agree completely. Ive been running an i3-2100 (it was free) with a 7950 boost. destroys every single game @1080p.
Mom wants a computer upgrade (shes running a Core2 Duo now) and i found a steal of a cpu deal (i5 3470 for $100), so im going to be giving her my i3 and 120 gb ssd and upgrading my own computer.
Origins of the post was once i see exactly what she has in terms of CPU now, what video card i should pair with it to create an HTPC

When I think of HTPC, I think of PCs that will not be used for games, in which case a discrete card is not even necessary unless you're trying to watch 3d movies. Or else you can look into the low level 7000 series.
