has anyone come across a graph or similar device that has a reasonable approximation of maximum gpu to cpu combo? basically the point where a cpu X will generally bottleneck vid card Y.
i imagine there are too many variables to really create such a device.

I think you said it right there. It's hard to tell with every games being so different. 1 game works well with nvidia, the other works better on amd, and then some games rely on the cpu a lot more...

Well that fricks me a lot. I had mine sold for $170 on Amazon the other day but I canceled the order because Early Curler told me he wanted it. He emailed me last night changing his mind saying his 430W power supply wouldn't run the card and his system. So not only do I take a hit to my seller score on Amazon for canceling that one guys order but that card is now on sale new on Newegg for the same price I had my used one sold for originally.
Sorry again Stout! For some reason I thought my PSU was 600w. I feel like a dumbass

if i had held off a tad longer i would have bought a 760 over the 7950 boost i ended up with
I wouldn't. The 7950 is a good bit ahead too (watch linus review of the 760). They probably won't release the new drivers for a few months, and by that time the new AMD gpus will probably be out.

You can use that card on a 430w.
What's your system?

I saw they traded blows in a lot of games by checking different sites. It all depends on what you are looking for though.

Currently, I have a HTPC that has the following:
Chipset: AMD A10-5800K Trinity 3.8GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket FM2 100W Quad-Core Desktop APU
Mobo: ASRock FM2A75 Pro4-M
Memory: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Cooler: H80
Case: Fractal Design Core 1000 USB 3.0
Power Supply: Corsair 450w
Regardless of the power, in order to avoid bottelnecks, I'd probably have to change out the mobo and chipset.
The problem is that when puff and I designed the htpc it was with light gaming in mind, however, the challenge of repurposing it to do two things (game and htpc) limits my options.
I intend to build a dedicated gaming pc in the next year or so (which I hope you guys can help with), but right now that's too much $.
If it would be a simple plug and play, then it wouldn't have been a problem, but I think i'm trying to do too much with a computer that wasn't designed to do those things in the first place.
I still feel like a shithead regardless. It wasn't my intent to dick Stout over.

nah probably not.
most of the large cases wont have any trouble but you would be surprised how many of the sub $50 cases will not fit a Hyper 212 though.
