Recruiting has nothing to do with what was left by the previous coach.

It does if the previous coach didn't recruit well. Johnny had to hit the ground running to fill up the roster after returning to Baton Rouge. It's pretty clear that Jones has upgraded the level of play since Trent's reign.

It's funny, Hickey was a pretty damned good defensive player his freshman year. So what happened?

He continued to be a good defensive guard considering his physical limitations.

Hickey was never a good defender. He just had high steal numbers. He got steals because he is quick and gambles similar to what Iverson did back in the day. Hickey was never gonna shut down a quality guard. Just like Mickey needs major work on post D. High block totals but those are due to him helping out on D. He got schooled numerous times on the block and was lost in rotations and closing out a ton.

The 2 are not related at all.

Jones' reputation is that of a good recruiter. He was given ample opportunity to prove that as soon as he got to Lsu, and that is somehow a bad thing?

You're essentially arguing he was put at a disadvantage by being able to fill a team with "his players" faster than if he had inheritied a full team of leftovers. Why is that?

That's not true at all. It's clear that, on paper, the talent on the roster has been upgraded. The end results of the first 2 seasons lean much more towards showing the level of play to be at the status quo rather than a clear upgrade.
