The 2000s have been a very underrated era of LSU basketball. In the ten years between 2000 and 2009, LSU did the following:

1. One Final Four
2. 2 sweet 16s
3. 3 SEC Titles
4. 4 SEC West Titles
5. 4 SEC POY awards
6. 5 NCAA tourney appearances

Unfortunately the bad years, were really bad. But I think most agree LSU is headed in the right direction with CJJ.

Obviously we've only been to the postseason twice since the Final Four run, but you can't say that there aren't signs of improvement coming.

To the OP:
Trent Johnson happened. Specifically, he totally failed to recruit the players needed to compete at a decent level, much less what LSU was accustomed to.

Perhaps he was at the wrong place; he came from Stanford. LSU isn't Stanford, and you won't go after the same type of player. That might have worked at Vanderbilt, but not here.

In any rate, Johnny Jones seems to know what type of player would come to LSU, and thus he's signed a top class. We should return to the level Brown had us at (and really, Brady too- take away the sanctions and we're in the postseason a lot with him too).

I really have quit following basketball for a long time

It's been mediocre since the 90's, even w/ Dale. Ups and downs have come. We've had some competitive teams that played well in the tourny, but for the most part LSU basketball has been a good year sprinked in every now and then. Expect one next year.

I remember the good years under Brown, and the drought after, until our recent final 4 run. I thought we were back.

CYou obviously don't remember the process Dale went through to build those teams, it didn't happen overnight. Coach Jones has started the process and his system is exciting. He is a great recruiter. Next year we should be leaps and bounds better.

In reality, LSU has never established any sustained basketball dominance. Sure, we've had some runs with great talent and even some 'cinderalla' momemts but definitely no dominance. I think we're just where we've always been. Don't worry, in the near future, things will get better for a year or two. We'll all have fun with basketball - again for a bit.
