I don't understand all the hate for Bitcoin. Is it actual hate for Bitcoin itself and what it represents, or is it hate for Wiki?
I don't think we hate Wiki. I know I don't. I don't understand his reasoning but that sure isn't hate. I think we actually enjoy the back and forth banter about the viability of bitcoin. Most of us aren't on his side of the table. That makes for interesting discussion imo.

I enjoy the back and forth with most of you as well. Some of y'all are clearly more interested in learning about it than others, but I even enjoy the banter with those of you that like to take quick and easy jabs.
These threads have caused me to do more research than I would have likely done normally, which is a good thing.
The sad thing about these threads, however, is that there is so much concentration on bitcoin specifically and not on the concept in general. And even though I've stated many times that bitcoin itself may fail but that a similar technology will eventually succeed, I am quite certain that if bitcoin itself ever does fail that you are all waiting for an "I told you so" moment.
That's ok though. Because 20 years from now when a crypto-currency is the norm throughout the world, y'all are going to think back to these threads and be like, "Hmmm, that guy Wiki was actually on to something..."

I'm waiting on that too.
But in the meantime, I do enjoy the discussion.

An Alberta man is hoping to become the first person to sell a house for Bitcoins. He's asking $405,000 Canadian, or its equivalent in Bitcoins, for the 3.6 acre site.
"We are hoping to be the first piece of real estate sold for bitcoins," Taylor More told us by e-mail. "We think maybe this could help push the currency more mainstream."
His listing describes the property as a "quaint two bedroom bungalow" that "sits on 3.6 acres with beautiful mountain views and 110' of breathtaking Crowsnest River frontage." It includes a 2800 square foot workshop that More says is "perfect for the handyman hobbiest and also features two additional finished bedrooms."

the point is, if they are moving to regulate the exchanges, it's only one step away from shutting down the exchanges, which would effectively kill bitcoin. which according to you was impossible.

quote:attempting to go legit as a currency will likely be the end of bitcoin. legitimacy and anonymity are more or less mutually exclusive. regulation, and therefore an increased ability to track individuals use of bitcoin, will result in it being less appealing to the overwhelming majority of it's current users, whether it be for silk road, poker, kiddie pron, etc. "legitimacy" is not what you want as a bitcoin fan.
many in the bitcoin community who are welcoming this "guidance" because it lends legitimacy to the currency.

quote:and like i said last time, stop using it's current price as a supporting argument. If more and more people began using bitcoin as a currency, the price wouldnt be going up like this. If more and more people are getting caught up in the excitement and buying them only as an investment just to sell later, it would be going up, just like it has been. you are actually making our argument for us when you post price updates like this. I mean literally told a poster last week who was talking about shorting them, "i definitely wouldnt, i think it'll keep going up for quite awhile"
less than a week later, bitcoin has broken through another all-time high and is exchanging at $54.

They aren't. They just clarified the existing regulations with some guidance.
The thing is, and I pointed this out earlier in the thread but it was ignored, most exchanges, even foreign ones if they accept US customers, already followed the laws. Go try to open an exchange account at MtGox and see all the legal hoops you have to go through. And yet they are located in Japan.

There is nothing to suggest that this will happen. It's pure speculation on your part.

I'll stand by what I've been saying for a long time now. Governments might attempt to fight the growth of decentralized digital currencies. Governments will ultimately lose the fight.
Now I hope to see you around here in 20 years so you can admit I was right.

Only in your deluded brain. Look, I get it, you love inflation. That's ok.

So then why aren't you buying so that you can capitalize on all the dumbasses that are getting caught up in the excitement?

Post them and I'll respond.
I had a long standing policy of ignoring LSURussian before I even started discussing bitcoins, but I got roped into some debates with him on bitcoins and quickly realized why I originally made that decision. LSURussian is literally the worst poster on this site and he literally makes this site a worse place. He has been responsible for some really shady things with other posters, including posting personal info and harassment. He regularly lies in the bitcoin threads and claim I said things that I didn't or parses words. The Money Board collective seems to worship him. I don't get it. But whatever...y'all are all big boys.
Now, if you have any questions that you want answered, then post them and I'll answer them.

I've never posted anything on this board about any poster that was not revealed by those posters about themselves (or by one of their IRL friends posting on here), such as where they work or where they went to school or what their name is. I have reminded them of their previous posts or called them by their name, which they or one of their friends disclosed in a post, which probably embarrassed them knowing they were so careless to disclose their personal information on a message board.
One of those posters apparently complained to the admins about me using his first name when I addressed him because I received a private message telling to stop using his name. I have not repeated his first name again although I only learned what his first name was because he was IM'ing and hard legging in a thread with a female poster (who no longer posts on TD) on the Poli Board late one night several years ago and she called him by his first name in that thread. Ironically, his last name is his screen name on TD.com. How's that for him wanting to protect his identity? But again, I've not used his name again in a reply to him since I received the PM.
If that is "harrassment" then they need to not disclose their personal information and/or ask their IRL friends to not disclose information about them. And I have never attempted to contact any person on TD.com who did not ask me to contact them by giving me either their email or phone number.
I have been in personal email contact with dozens of posters on TD.com as a result of mutual interests and requested to do so by those posters and I've never disclosed any personal information about them, nor will I.

One of the bitcoin exchange links wiki posted a while back (the exchange is called MtGox or something like that...I forget the exact name now) says on its website home page "we process over 80% of bitcoin transactions." At least it said that back when I clicked on the link. If one exchange processes over 80% of bitcoin transactions, the govt can do great harm to the system if it only shuts down that one exchange.
