Not keeping Harper won't be for lack of options

Many of us were disappointed in the dollars doled out to Harper when he was extended. He was the benefactor of coming offf the SB win and having a big first year under GW. It also was a very thin free agent and draft class that year for safeties- a strong seller's market.

If they can't come to fresh terms this year the choices are abundant. The Rams released solid Quintin Mikell today for cap relief. Mikell graded out as a top-five safety in Pro Football Focus' 2012 ratings. Look at the safety names out there-

Quintin Mikell
Dashon Goldson
Ed Reed
Louis Delmas
Kenny Phillips
Glover Quin
Laron Landry
Pat Chung
Chris Clemons
Adrian Wilson
Gerald Sensabaugh

if that wasn't enough look at the list of decent safety prospects that might be had at #75 or later-

Jonathan Cyprien, FIU
Shawn Williams, GA
Robert Lester, ALA (a Harper clone?)
JJ Wilcox, Ga Sou
Phillip Thomas, Fresno St
Shamarko Thomas, SYR
Bacarri Rambo, GA
Duke Williams, NEV

Think I'll get on the horn to Mickey and remind him to go hardball with Harper. I can't remember such good a buyer's market for safety in many years.

Best FA safety market I can remember.
Would love Shamarko Thomas Syr.

I'd imagine that he is aware of this too. Although I think he could fit Ryan's system really well, his price is ridiculous. Loomis and the FO are looking hard at potential editions to the defense, and Harper should know that if he doesn't adjust this price he's gone. This market is very deep, and the Saints could replace him for a cheaper price.

That was a surprise to me this morning. I wouldn't mind signing him, but he might be a little expensive too. I don't really see any other FAs I "really really want" that much more than Harper at this point.

That would be awesome IMO. It would make up for losing out on Moore. I think it all depends on what happens with Bushrod though.

If Mickey doesn't have his game plan already, we're in deep shite...in more ways than just Harper!

I would hope Mickey already knows this and will offer him minimum wage. Not a fan of Roman's.

He played a lot better than Jenkins, and I would love to have him back.

He has to be affordable for us, plain and simple

Laron Landry

If we want a guy who can play like a LB, but can't cover, why not cut Harper and sign Landry. He has always been asked to do too much in the NFL, except for when he played with Sean Taylor. Those guys were great together for the little time they were together because it allowed Landry to do what he should be doing. Put him in the role people are expecting Harper to play in the new defense and I think he could shine. But of course, I'm obviously not objective on this one.
