I'm an old timer and I will state that Jack faced stiffer competition from #2 - #10 in the fields, particularly in the majors. As someone else posted, look at the major records of Watson, Player, Palmer, et al.
Now where Peej, some others and I differ is I feel todays fields are stronger and deeper from 1 - 40 than those Jack faced in his career from 1 - 40.

And here we go again with another old timer. Unless I'm missing your point.
I have no idea what you are saying.
Sometimes what you see today is the the best of all time. Sometimes it's not. In this case it's not, and its asinine to even argue that it is. But ESPN needs something to "debate," so people are convinced that it it just might be.
By your logic, Wayne Gretzky cannot possibly be the greatest hockey player of all time because today's hockey players are bigger, stronger and faster, and there are more teams too!

No its not..........
do you really believe that the tour is not deeper now?
oh and 75 wins in 296 starts on today's PGA Tour is one of the most amazing stats in sports.

In the same sense. Brandt Sned wins a major this year? Anyone who says no is the same saying Tiger doesn't. You have to prove it in the big ones. Not the small ones. Not saying WGC is small but its no major.
dude, tiger has proven it 14 times. brandt has never gotten it done. BIG difference.

Today's fields are much deeper. Nationwide players today would have been Tour players back then.
They were great players, and Watson has definitely proved it with his longevity, but he also hit the ball differently than players than. Same with Palmer and Jack. Trevino wouldn't have competed today with a low cut.
It was easier back then to be a multiple major winner

i think even gateway tour players could make it back then.

Lolz at the Tiger haters in this thread. He's the goat, get over it already.

Want to tee it up with Lee in a $100 Nassau? Bring your life savings.
In his prime, he could contend anytime, anywhere. And he wouldn't need a swing coach, a fitness coach, a mental coach, and a coach to coach the coaches.

eh, trevino would have figured out a way to play today's courses. he is one of the greats of all time.

Ill look back at some research I did. But Im pretty sure it came with Jack playing 20 HOF's and Tiger is facing about 12.

Wait are you talking about the field of players or just Tiger? Because Tiger is the GOAT

The top is no question harder from Jacks days...The deeper is from Tigers.

I wouldn't say it's ever been easy. It was harder to play well consistently with the older equipment in Jack's day.

Tom Watson was one hole from winning a major FOUR YEARS AGO AT AGE 60.
But go on with your stupid argument that things are harder now because the people from 20-50 who never win tournaments anyway are better in 2013.

I agree with that. The way I meant to phrase that was that he would have had to reinvent himself. The low cut wouldn't have worked on today's major American courses

You are right here............ Amazing, But it also proves my point of overall weaker competition..........

It proves that he is The Chosen One. Anyone that thinks today's Tour isn't deeper is lying to themselves.
And Tiger wins so much because of the same way Jack did. Don't make mistakes, let others make them.

Based on what?????? Equipment??? The courses wre close to the same........ YES Todays players are stronger and are in better shape and the equipment is amazing compared to the 60's and 70's. But Golf is 90% Mental and 10% physical... This has NEVER CHANGED........
