I have read some stuff saying that bone development, aka hip displaysia, is tied directly to the diet of the dog for the first 1.5yrs

I think displaysia is purely genetic. The guarantee I got with my dog was that at 18months I have her hips checked. If she had it, the breeder would pay for the test and give me a new pup or 1/2 my money back. I never bothered having her tested because she was not going to be bred.
It really won't matter unless you are going to breed the dog.

Wrong, it is due to inbreading pure bread dogs.
