HS vs NFL
A deeper look into that number everyone seems to be oh so obsessed about.

Alabama offensive lineman D.J. Fluker, who ran a 4.9 second 40-yard dash in high school despite weighing 350 pounds and perpetually looking like he smelled fish, added 0.41 seconds to his 40 time by the end of his four years with Nick Saban.
frickin lol

Did the article show their weights leaving high school compared to when they left college.
My educated guess tells me the average is 20lbs or so. If you gain 20 and run as fast or very close to it, it means your actually faster but carrying more mass slows your overall time (mostly in the start)

No shat.. Hand timers will give you lower times than a NFL combine official time will. I don't get how people don't understand this.

The only other explanation is that almost all high school 40 times are bogus.
Just saw that line in the article. That is is truth. I remember the times from high school. We had guys running 4.5s in high school that I would bet my life only ran about a 4.7

That article is full of holes. Wts of players increases a lot from high school senior to senior in college. Esp with regards to muscle mass. How accurate the high school 40 times really are. Where were they taken, where they wind aided, etc etc. Their conclusion is really ridiculous. That the coaches such as Saban, Miles, etc, want a slower game so that they can fit in more commercials? Just dumb.

I think the end was tongue and cheek and he actually was saying High school 40s are bogus. At least I hope he was or he is naive as hell.

So wait, you mean HS 40 times are not accurate?

I went to a high school combine. The timers in the 40 were chatting it up while they were timing the runners. I saw one where the guy was literally facing another coach saying something while a kid was running his 40. He turned just before the kid crossed the finish line.
I would think the times at these things are all over the map. If you run enough of them, you'll get somebody with a quick trigger who shaves a bunch off your time.
These days, you'll have a chance to do UA, Nike SPARQ, NUC, Next Level, several team camps and a lot of these kids will do more than one of each (for example, I think some of them went to New Orleans SPARQ, then went to Houston too).
I'm probably forgetting a bunch.
I'm sure some of these camps -- maybe Nike or UA -- have electronic times, but for the most part, I think they are hand-timed. Eventually, you'll find a quick trigger that's going to make you look good.

IIRC Jeryl ran a lazer time at the opening

Once on an NFL roster, guess how many times a player will be timed in the 40 again?

Sam Montgomery ran a 4.44 in high school? I guess that's why he was called Sonic Sam
