Great American Rock Band w/caveat of Modern Era.

There are really only two choices.

Black Crows or Government Mule.

WSP, Allmans, The Dead --- not current "Rock" bands.

wilco uncle tupelo was better. Wilco is alt-country or pop at best.

He didnt specify modern era..... He specifically said that we should choose from any era.

When I thought he was talking modern era I said black keys or maybe WSP or Phish.... That maybe was depending on how far you would extend the extremely malleable term "modern era"

Govt mule isn't known enough to be the greatest. The greatest should be a household name. Everyone in America should've heard at least one song by the "Greatest American Rockband" or at the very least heard their name.

Black keys is really the only option IMO.

Now if we're talking all time it has to be The ABB, The Grateful Dead or CCR.

They're the only ones that combine legacy, musicianship and popularity at a high enough degree IMO. No one HATES those three bands and everyone can sing along to one of their songs.

Wilco hasnt made an alt-country album in 10 years. Also, yankee hotel foxtrot is far from pop. Nice try though.
